Downgrading the dS Firmware Using a USB Stick

This guide allows you to revert your dSS server to an older firmware version (downgrade). This may be necessary, for example, if you updated from version 1.19.12 to version 1.19.13 and want to return to the previous version.

Requirements

For the downgrade, you need:

  • A USB stick with at least 1 GB of free storage space
  • The USB stick must be formatted with the FAT32 file system
  • The desired USB update file for the firmware version

Please also note that we cannot provide any warranty or guarantee for hardware or software issues resulting from errors during the downgrade process. Free support for problems arising from this procedure is excluded.

Instructions

1. Download the USB update file

Download the firmware version 1.19.12:

2. Copy files to the USB stick

Important: For safety reasons, create a backup file before performing this procedure.

  1. Unpack the downloaded ZIP file.
  2. Copy the unpacked folder to the USB stick.
  3. Create an empty file named inside the digitalstrom-upgrade folder:
    • forceflashandreset

The file must have no file extension. Be careful not to add a .txt extension.

3. Connect the USB stick

  1. Insert the USB stick into the dSS.
  2. The dSS will now start the flashing process.

4. LED indicators during the downgrade

During the process, the status LED shows different states:

  • The LED blinks blue. After a while, the LED briefly turns red and then blinks blue again.

Important: Do not remove the USB stick during this process under any circumstances.

5. Completion of the flashing process

Once the flashing process is complete:

  1. The LED blinks yellow.
  2. Now the USB stick must be removed.

Note: In some cases, the LED may also remain solid blue after the flashing process is complete.

6. Restart

After removing the USB stick, the dSS will automatically restart.

The process is successfully completed when the status LED then glows solid green.

 

Check firmware version

The currently installed firmware version is displayed at the bottom left in the dSS web interface.

There you can verify whether the downgrade was successfully performed and the firmware version 1.19.12 is installed.
